So, I’ve been doing some work with pens lately.  This is another sketch from last week’s “CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER”.  This one’s the middle panel, obviously.  I did the pencils in my car on my lunch break, and I did the ink last weekend.

I’ve been curious about inking (I even looked at a couple pen sets (though this one is done with nothing more than a bic permanent marker)) for a couple weeks.  After seeing the Avengers and then grabbing stuff on Free Comic Book day, I was really thinking about the old ways.

Not to diminish what Bjorn and I do, but the old fashioned way of doing comics/graphic novels is really cool and a unique art form.  So I wanted to take a whack at it.  I’ve got a couple more coming up, I’m sure.

This is a real rough sketch I put together for yesterday’s comic.  I really struggled with how to put the hair-do.  Should it be all neat and stuff?  But I’m going to be a wild and weird old dude, so I figured I’d just draw the usual and mix in a little Doc Brown.

This is some of the concept work I did for Amateur Apiculture.  This is inspired from it being springtime and me walking past bees and wasps on my way to my boss’ office.  I typically spend at least 30 minutes a day imagining ways out of that place.  This one happened to make it into the strip.

Anyway, that yellow page was originally intended to be the first panel, but Bjorn and I worked it out and it was much funnier.  He has this way with words.

This is a sketch page I drew up for the comic, We the Wizards.  Bjorn and I roll with these two guys, the one on the right is actually featured in Bachelorious Malleus Part Two.  He is the Warmaster, and may actually be charged with getting Bjorn and myself into table top gaming way back in the Dizzay.
Needless to say, the Warmaster didn’t get a good representation in Bach, so I wanted to redo him and do Cormander right to begin with.  They actually came out better here than in the strip (I think).  I also forgot the scruff for WM, but can’t change that now.  I’ll get the chance to do them more justice in the future, I’m sure.
You’ll note that the Warmaster is sleeping.  That happens from time to time - sometimes we drink more beer than we roll dice.  I was going to stick with that, but after reviewing the script Bjorn had written up for it, I realized the Warmaster had a line, so he had to be awake.
I really need to roll soon, It’s starting to hurt.

Here’s the room layout for yesterday’s comic.  I was originally going to have Bjorn eating at the couch, and sitting up.  But the lay down, given the way we broke it up over three panels, was a lot of fun to draw.

So last week we ran a comic everyday from Tuesday thru Friday.  It was basically our comic journal of PAX East 2012.  It was a really cool time.  They were little vignettes, and while they didn’t take as long to draw as a full three panel strip, I got to get a taste of a daily strip.  It was a lot of work.  I’m really appreciative of my girlfriend (who thought the fruit fucker was really cute, by the way) for being supportive while I was up in the study drawing comics all week.  They apartment got a little messy and I didn’t pull my weight too much, but damn she’s the absolute best.

I really enjoyed PAX.  I’d never been before and I look forward to going again.  It was a lot to take in all at once.  My favorite thing, other than meeting Jerry Holkins, was definitely the Paint the Line TCG.  It’s based of off the Penny Arcade strip(s) of the same name and was a lot of fun.  They were running a beta test, that Bjorn and I checked out twice.  Bjorn’s post has more details but I figured I should say again how awesome it was.

Anyway, it’s actually pretty late, so enjoy the pictures.

So, this is all work related to “What Dreams May Come”.  I’d been working since Sunday on this comic and “A Definitive Work”.  I was worried this one would take so much time that I wouldn’t get it ready for yesterday.  We really wanted it up because today is the start of PAX East.  Bjorn and I are very, very excited.

This is actually one of the very first comics we wrote.  And, I drew it a long time ago, well before Unnatural 20 ever went live.  I think this huge scale, six - but really eight - panel comic took me an entire Sunday.

Anyway, we decided it would be a great prelude for when we went to PAX East, to get us all pumped up.  But, as time progressed so did my art and I felt it would be weird to post it, so I decided to re-draw it.  The original comic strip is not as good as the one on the site.

All of the sketches I drew within the last week-or-so.  I wanted to do a better job of the characitures of our nerd-heroes, especailly Wil Wheaton.  In the original, you’ll note he has a huge head and tiny arms.  I justified it at the time by saying “it’s a cartoon,” which I still think is a legitimate argument to make, but I knew I could do better.

Anyway, enjoy.

P.S. I did not know this, but you may have to hit the scroll button that appears on the sides of the photo when you put your mouse there to view multiple pictures.  I’m so bad at the internet though, that I have no effing idea.

This one’s a little bonus round, I guess.  The first is some of the sketching I did for “A Definitive Work”.  That was interesting.  I originally had no idea how to draw a female dwarf, as you can see from the bottom of the second picture.  I sketched the second page while Bjorn and I were discussing the strips.

You’ll also see the computer/third panel from “EcoSystem Requirements”.  I liked the size of that one.

So, long before we launched Unnatural 20, we had the idea on paper.  Bjorn and I spent almost a year designing our characters and coming up with a few comic ideas.  I saved up for my intuos and photoshop, and we did some more ground work.  Finally our friend Chris over at Nonsense Society help us get our site started and it was time to go.
I drew this version of Alternate Forms of Critique a few months before the site went live.  It was one of my first experiments with photoshop.  Needless to say, by the time the site was good to go this wasn’t.  I really, really loved this comic though, so I decided to redraw it, and I think it came out pretty good, as did it’s predecessor (at the time).
